Social Media and social
networking making our communication easier and faster. Social media comprises
large community who follow the social media sites and sharing information with
each other. Social media expanding the communication channels. In past communication
usually took place over the phone and postal services and then the email creation
made the communication faster and easier. Now social media is taking over the
email and we can perceive this by the social media sites. Websites like
Facebook, My Space, change.org, and LinkedIn encourage people, so they can send
their messages, posts, profiles and exchange their information with each other.
Communication through social
media giving people a platform where they can communicate conceitedly. Using
social media sites people can talk about anything openly. They share their
thoughts, ideas, opinions, personal matters, and can access the news faster which
is not possible from postal services, email and telephone.
The change of communication
social media is inspiring and positively affecting our society. Social Media
giving opportunity to people so they can easily reach those who are in
different countries. Social media allow them to post pictures, do video chat
and text. This is more convenience and time saving as well. Mail, telephone
calls and emails requires time and are not much faster than the social media sites.
However, this change of
communication negatively affecting business world. Business advertising utilize
older form of communication to get interact with customers. To promote their business
they are using mail, telephone calls and email. Social Media taking people away from these
methods and forcing businesses to move to new communication channel of social
media. As social media is expanding rapidly it can also bring good change to
business world. If business use it correctly then it can bring positive change
to the advertising region of business.
I disagree that communication moving towards social media has had ill effects on businesses. Social media has allowed business owners from all over the world to gain legitimacy through the use of free advertising, and expanding customer base through sites like Yelp and different smartphone apps as well. Business owners who have failed to adapt have essentially refused to use the most important tool developed in the last century, and deserve to be left behind if they are unable to utilize simple tools on the internet. The ease of communication and speed with which transactions occur is completely unparalleled and should be relied upon for any successful businessman.

ReplyDeleteSocial median making complex social coordination easy, fast and more importantly efficient. Businesses that adapt with the pace of social medina get the most of it and those who lag behind with social media seem to suffer. Social media are businesses for profit like other businesses and should not criticized for any downfall of firms that could not compete with their competitors.
ReplyDeleteThis social media advancement is very beneficial for none businesses consumers as well and that is why businesses fighting to get their advertising via social media. Since nothing is free, consumers also more vulnerable to identity theft through social media. Consumers also becoming addictive to social media, which is why people want to get into social media through their cellphones while driving which the costs, may exceed the benefits gained.
I would agree there are some aspects of social media effecting business, for example the increased customer power and the negative or misleading statements about the businesses. By these I mean that people are capable of making false statements about a business and it becomes increasingly hard for the business to keep track of all the negative comments.
ReplyDeleteSocial media has become a place for people to say things that they would never say because they are behind a computer screen and can become anonymous. It's like the online disinhibition effect, where individuals will act completely different from who they are in person. For example, a person may have a bad day and then have a bad experience at a restaurant leading them to lash out online at the establishment (giving a bad review). Although, they have never had a bad experience before but this one time can change a business review for future customers because they post a bad review but in reality the waitress was bad not the restaurant.
I feel that for small businesses this would be a huge negative for them because it would be harder for them to find all the possible negative comments, where big businesses would have a much easier time finding all the negative comments and correcting them. Social media is ruining some aspects but on the other hand it has helped a lot of companies become big.
This is an interesting topic Sarah and I would definitely say that social media has indeed open different and interesting ways for business to be done. For most, it has been an eye opener and ways for business owners to reach more customers. At the end of the day, I believe it all comes down to change, We all know that change is hard but living in a world where everything is constantly changing, we all have to learn to change with it in order not to be left behind. As a photographer, I know for a fact that I would not have been able to reach some few clients I have today if not for social media. The old ways of doing business still works but if one needs a bigger help, then you have to do what millions of people are doing to better their business.
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that social Media has shown the business world a new way of finding success. These businesses are facing this transition of changing methods, which is switching from using phone calls, emails, etc to social media sites. In adopting this change due to their customer needs (as more customers can be gained through social media sites by advertising than calling people or emailing to advertise) some businesses are doing better than others. I would like to know more about the negative and positive side of social media for businesses. Looking forward to see more blog posts from you about this topic.
Hi Sarah,
ReplyDeleteI think you're going to have to really work to prove a few of these things. 1. To say how it's been such a positive is a defensible enough statement. However, you're going to have to note all the dissent to that opinion. Things like loss of face-to-face connections, long-form journalism suffering, the proliferation of online bullying. 2. I think the harder thing you'll have to prove that social media has been a net-negative for businesses. I'm not sure the data supports that, and even if it was true, it would be awfully hard to prove. Maybe think about framing it like: "It's been a negative to those businesses that do not keep up with the changing social marketing trends." Look forward to reading how you handle it!
I agree that social media might be hurting some businesses. This would be those that do not know how to use it correctly. Like you said, social media can be free advertising and very beneficial but that is not easily done. Social media has caused businesses to have departments in the business dedicated solely on their social media pages. But there are some businesses that would not be around if it was not for their use of social media. This is how many small businesses get their product out because they cannot afford the advertising that the bigger businesses use. It has kind of leveled the playing field.
ReplyDeleteI don't fully agree with your topic in the sense that social media has opened different channels of communications, but it's not taking over the old methods. There are various limitations that social media has that if a business solely relied on that would suffer greatly. Twitter for example limits how many characters one could have in a tweet, Facebook status' are also limited in the sense that if too long it will cut your message, and not everyone is going to click the link to read more. Email provides that safe conversation environment, where one per say in the government can send encrypted emails to another for national security reason. However, if we start using public sites imagine the catastrophic consequences this country could have because of how easy it is to hack into social media accounts. You are forgetting that there is also other means of communications like newspapers where businesses can reach others, TV, and radio also other forms that businesses can use to deliver their message to their customers.
ReplyDeleteSocial media has served as an extremely important innovation since its beginning. The way we communication has changed ten folds – it is hard to believe mail use to be delivered by horses taking anywhere from days to weeks to deliver. When my dad got orders to Germany when my parents first got married my mothers family communicated with her through letters which took forever and long distance calls were a fortune. Today we can send a private message on facebook, twitter, or we can text. Social media is surpassing what I’m sure others did not think it would. However, it also benefits businesses and etc.
ReplyDeleteHello! You are right about the impact of social media in our daily lives and the platform it has created for mass communication. However, how has it been a negative impact for business? Often times, Facebook and twitter and etc. promotes business through their advertisement on social media. Wouldn't you say that's helping their business by increasing their prevalence to a larger audience through a very easily transmitted source?
